Using 2022–2024 official turnover data and IPCC top-down emission factors, this study estimates energy use and CO2 emissions from China's freight industry. Energy consumption rose from 593.25 to 665.45 million tce and CO2 from 1308.44 to 1466.38 million tons, with road freight dominating volume (~73.5%) and energy use (87–88%). It recommends modal shift to electrified rail and coastal shipping, electric-truck deployment, sustainable fuels, and inclusion of freight in carbon markets.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
This paper adds sectoral empirical evidence on freight decarbonization to the global transport transition literature, relevant to Scope 3 accounting and supply-chain emissions under TCFD/ISSB. Its policy mix—modal shift, electrification, alternative fuels, and carbon market inclusion—offers a comparative reference for other large emitters designing freight decarbonization pathways.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Against China’s commitments to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, the freight industry, a major energy consumer and emitter, demands attention. This study estimated the energy consumption and carbon emissions from the freight industry in China based on the data of 2022–2024 official turnover, energy source types and IPCC “top-down” CO 2 emission factors. The results showed the total freight volume and turnover in China grew, and the total energy consumptions from the freight industry in China increasing from 593.25 million tce (2022) to 665.45 million tce (2024). The road freight dominated volume (≈73.53%) and energy consumption (87.55%–88.12%). The total CO 2 emissions from the freight industry in China increased from 1308.44 million tons in2022 to 1466.38 million tons in 2024. To meet the 2030/2060 carbon goals, it is recommended that cargo be shifted to electrified rail and coastal waterways, that electric-truck deployment be accelerated, that sustainable fuels be integrated in air and shipping, and that freight be included in an expanding carbon market. Overall, achieving deep decarbonization in China’s freight sector requires a systemic transition driven by transport mode optimization, accelerated fleet electrification, alternative fuel adoption, and market-based policy instruments.
