English

This study evaluates multifunctional ground-mounted photovoltaic (GMPV) systems through expert interviews, literature review, and field inspections of eight installations in Austria. It finds the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) insufficient and introduces a novel Multi Land Use Effectiveness (MLUE) method for comprehensive assessment. Results show that ecologically integrated GMPV can support both energy transition and biodiversity conservation, offering a practical planning tool.

In the global GX context

Globally, as solar deployment accelerates, land-use conflicts with biodiversity are a growing concern. This study's MLUE method offers a more comprehensive framework than LER for assessing multifunctional land use, relevant to international sustainability reporting and land-use planning. It supports the integration of biodiversity considerations into renewable energy projects, aligning with global frameworks like the EU's Nature Restoration Law.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

Background The expansion of ground-mounted photovoltaic (GMPV) systems raises critical questions regarding sustainable land use and biodiversity conservation. As solar energy deployment accelerates, potential land-use conflicts emerge, including ecological disturbances during the construction phase, restricted wildlife movement due to fencing, and shading effects that alter habitat conditions. This study draws on expert interviews with project developers, a comprehensive literature review, and field inspections of eight multifunctional GMPV installations across Austria. It aims to assess the potential of multifunctional land use and to evaluate existing quantification approaches. Results The findings reveal that the commonly applied Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) is insufficient to adequately capture the complexity of multiple land-use systems in the context of GMPV. Therefore, this study develops and introduces a novel approach, the Multi Land Use Effectiveness (MLUE) method, which enables a more comprehensive assessment of land-use efficiency and ecological integration. Results indicate that, when guided by ecological foresight and the integration of multiple land uses, GMPV systems can contribute to the energy transition while simultaneously enhancing biodiversity. Conclusions The proposed MLUE approach provides a more comprehensive framework for evaluating multifunctional land-use systems than existing methods. It highlights the potential of ecologically integrated GMPV systems to reconcile renewable energy generation with biodiversity conservation and offers a practical tool to support sustainable planning and decision-making for future photovoltaic developments.
