A cradle-to-grave LCA (ISO 14040/14044) comparing solar PV, wind, and nuclear power for amine-based CO2 capture integrated with CO2-EOR in the UAE, with a functional unit of one tonne of CO2 permanently stored. Power source choice decisively shapes GWP, energy demand, water, and land impacts: solar benefits from the UAE's resource but faces intermittency and land constraints, while nuclear offers dispatchable low-carbon power at high capital cost. The study integrates LCA with strategic sustainability screening to support operator, policymaker, and investor decisions beyond carbon intensity alone.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract This study presents a strategic sustainability assessment of low-carbon power options for amine-based CO2 capture integrated with CO2-enhanced oil recovery in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Although capture and EOR can reduce industrial emissions and support mature oilfield productivity, their overall sustainability depends strongly on the energy used for solvent regeneration, CO2 compression, transport, and injection. The objective is to compare solar photovoltaic, wind, and nuclear power pathways and identify where each option can deliver the lowest environmental burden and the strongest practical value for UAE carbon management projects. A cradle-to-grave life-cycle assessment is conducted in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. The functional unit is defined as one tonne of CO2 permanently stored through an integrated capture, transport, injection, and EOR system. The system boundary includes low-carbon power generation, solvent production and degradation, amine-based CO2 capture, CO2 compression, pipeline transport, reservoir injection, and long-term storage. Three energy supply scenarios are evaluated: solar photovoltaic, wind, and nuclear. Inventory data are developed using regional energy statistics, plant-level operating assumptions, published process models, and representative performance data for capture and CO2-EOR operations. Environmental indicators include global warming potential, cumulative energy demand, water consumption, and land use. In addition to life-cycle indicators, the study applies a strategic sustainability screening process to assess the practical suitability of each power option. This includes dispatchability, grid integration, proximity to industrial CO2 sources, proximity to EOR-suitable reservoirs, capital and operating cost considerations, and compatibility with UAE energy and decarbonization priorities. The findings demonstrate that the choice of power source is a decisive factor in the overall sustainability performance of CO2 capture and CO2-EOR. Solar photovoltaic power offers strong potential given the UAE's exceptional solar resource, and its ability to reduce indirect emissions from capture operations is significant. Nevertheless, intermittency, land requirements, and the need for storage or grid balancing present challenges for continuous capture processes. Wind power provides viable supplementary low-carbon electricity in coastal and offshore-influenced locations, though its applicability is more geographically constrained. Nuclear power delivers stable, dispatchable, low-carbon energy well-suited to continuous capture operations, with a low life-cycle carbon intensity, though it carries high capital costs and long planning horizons. The main contribution is the integration of life-cycle assessment with strategic sustainability criteria for CO2 capture and CO2-EOR deployment in the UAE. This approach goes beyond carbon intensity alone and supports decisions informed by environmental impact, operational reliability, land and water constraints, infrastructure compatibility, and regional suitability. The framework can help operators, policymakers, and investors select low-carbon power configurations that are environmentally credible and aligned with national decarbonization and energy-diversification priorities.
