This study proposes an integrated low-carbon power pathway from municipal solid waste combining steam gasification, in-line tar cracking, an externally fired gas turbine, and a supercritical CO2 cycle. Using response surface methodology and NSGA-II Pareto analysis, it optimizes trade-offs among energetic performance, emissions, and economics. The optimum yields 18.9 MW at 0.02065 $/kWh, 82.08% efficiency, and ~54 kt CO2/year—about 50% lower than a conventional coal plant.

In the global GX context
Globally, waste-to-energy with CCS or high-efficiency conversion is increasingly recognized as a hard-to-abate decarbonization lever, though it sits outside mainstream disclosure frameworks like TCFD/ISSB. The paper's techno-economic optimization offers a quantitative basis for transition finance and project-level carbon accounting in the waste sector.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Clean energy production and effective waste management are two imperative requirements of the modern energy world as both serve significant roles solving the ever-increasing energy need and emission control to decarbonize the energy sector. This study proposes an integrated pathway for low-carbon power generation from municipal solid waste (MSW) that combines steam gasification with an in-line tar-cracking reactor, an externally fired gas turbine (EFGT) as the prime mover, and a compact, high-efficiency supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) power cycle for flue gas heat recovery. The proposed configuration is evaluated from environmental and techno-economic perspectives and the effects of changing the individual decision variables as well as their combined effects were analyzed on the response variables. Finally, the plant has been systematically optimized using response surface methodology, including Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II)-based Pareto analysis to quantify trade-offs among energetic performance, emissions mitigation, and economic feasibility. The optimization study shows that the proposed system is capable of producing 18.9 MW of electricity at a production cost of 0.02065 $/kWh, with efficiency as high as 82.08 % (about 135% higher compared to the conventional coal-based subcritical plant). On the other hand, the CO 2 emission at the optimum operating condition has been found to be around 54 kilo tonne/year, which is approximately 50% lower than that of the conventional plant, for the same power generation.
