English
A project-level assessment of the Baotou Green Energy Island evaluates an electricity-heat-hydrogen coupled system. It accommodates 524 GWh of renewable electricity annually and cuts about 149,900 tCO2 per year. Without incentives the project is not economically viable, but with CCER trading, clean heating prices and a green hydrogen premium it reaches an 8% benchmark return at an RMB 25/kg hydrogen price.

In the global GX context
Offers a concrete project-level case of sector coupling (power-heat-hydrogen) and shows how carbon credit trading plus green premiums can close the viability gap for green hydrogen — directly relevant to global transition-finance and hydrogen-economy debates.

📄 Abstract(原文)
In the context of high-penetration renewable energy integration, this paper addresses challenges of renewable energy curtailment, high cost associated with green hydrogen production and insufficient flexibility of regional energy systems. Taking the Baotou Green Energy Island project as a case study, a project-level assessment is conducted to analyse the comprehensive benefits of the system in terms of renewable energy integration, carbon dioxide emission reduction, waste heat utilization and economic viability. The results demonstrate that the project accommodates 524 GWh of renewable electricity annually and achieves total annual carbon dioxide emission reductions of 149,900 tCO2. Without incentive mechanisms, the project exhibits insufficient economic viability. However, with the inclusion of CCER trading, clean heating prices and a green premium for green hydrogen, the project can achieve the 8% benchmark rate of return when the ex-factory price of green hydrogen reaches RMB 25/kg. These findings indicate that electricity-heat-hydrogen coupling represents an important pathway for enhancing renewable energy integration, improving overall energy utilization efficiency and promoting the low-carbon transition of regional energy systems.
