English
ESB Networks explored AI to distinguish looped (shared) from normal service cables using ~10 million smart-meter rollout photographs, since manual review was impractical. The selected model achieved 95% recall and 64% precision, prioritizing looped-service detection over false positives. This enables mapping of an estimated 300,000–400,000 shared connections to support rising loads from low-carbon technology adoption.

In the global GX context
As grids face load growth from electrification, this shows how utilities can leverage existing image datasets with AI for asset visibility—relevant to transition-planning and grid-investment disclosure under ISSB/TCFD physical-risk and capex narratives. It illustrates operational data infrastructure underpinning credible decarbonization commitments.

📄 Abstract(原文)
A service cable connects the customer's premises to the Low Voltage (LV) mains network. Usually, a single service cable supplies one premises, but a looped service cable supplies multiple customers. Historically, looped service connections were used to reduce new connection costs. However, with increasing electrical load driven by the adoption of Low Carbon Technology (LCT) equipment, these shared service cables are no longer suitable to carry the load of multiple customers. ESB Network's did not maintain a record of the locations and volume of the looped service connections, but they are estimated to be approximately 300,000 to 400,000. ESB Networks holds a database of approximately 10 million photographs captured during the smart meter (SM) rollout. Although a normal and a looped service can be distinguished visually, manually reviewing this volume of images is impractical. As part of an innovation project within ESB Networks, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to distinguish between looped and normal services from photographs was explored. Several AI models were trained and evaluated on independent image datasets. The selected model demonstrated a recall of 95% and a precision of 64%, prioritising the identification of looped services with less concern over false positives.
