English

Compares annual, hourly (24/7), and consequential emissions matching for corporate renewable procurement across 13 Asian countries (2025–2035) using Transition Zero's capacity expansion modeling. A consequential emissions-optimized portfolio cuts 1.8–3.1× more global emissions than annual or hourly matching at the same cost by prioritizing higher-emission grids. Least-cost capacity expansion model results align with a consequential marginal build emissions rate derived from historical data.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Directly informs the GHGP Scope 2 revision debate by showing that consequential matching can deliver greater global emissions impact than hourly or annual matching in Asian grids. Adds Asian empirical evidence to a literature dominated by US/EU studies, relevant to ISSB/CSRD Scope 2 disclosure and transition finance allocation.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Voluntary corporate renewable energy procurement is a critical driver of global grid decarbonization, and the choices made by purchasers are heavily influenced by the accounting standards used to define emissions claims. As the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) revises its Scope 2 Guidance, three primary strategies have emerged: annual volume matching, hourly matching (24/7), and consequential emissions matching. While previous research has evaluated these strategies in the United States and Europe, there is a significant research gap regarding their impact in rapidly developing Asian markets. This study provides a systematic comparison of these three strategies across 13 Asian countries-including India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand-from 2025 to 2035. Using Transition Zero's Scenario Builder tool for capacity expansion modeling, we evaluate the cost-effectiveness and total emissions reductions of each strategy. We find that a consequential emissions optimized portfolio can reduce 1.8-3.1 times more global emissions than annual or hourly matched portfolios for the same cost by prioritizing investment toward higher emission grids in the region. These findings suggest that a consequential approach to voluntary procurement can increase global impact over locational and temporal matching. We also find good alignment between emissions changes predicted by least-cost capacity expansion models and a consequential marginal build emissions rate calculated from historical data.
