English

This study develops an integrated framework combining early-stage Carbon Designer 3D modelling, EN 15978 cradle-to-cradle LCA, Building Circularity v2, and multi-criteria environmental impact analysis, applied to a hotel building. Regenerative design strategies cut embodied GWP by 20%, Module D delivered a 10% avoided-emissions benefit, and circular strategies extended material service life by 10 years, indicating roughly 35–40% embodied carbon reductions at early design stages and a net positive environmental outcome.

In the global GX context

Embodied carbon in construction is a major Scope 3 Category 1/2 disclosure item under ISSB/CSRD and increasingly under TCFD-aligned transition planning. The paper's integrated early-stage LCA-plus-circularity workflow offers a replicable method for quantifying and reducing embodied emissions, supporting near-zero building targets and circular-economy reporting in global real estate and construction.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The building and construction sector is responsible for 37 – 40% of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHGs) and CO2 emissions, with around 10% arising directly from the embodied carbon of building materials and construction activities. In recent years, attention has been concentrated on the regulation of operational carbon, while embodied carbon across the full life cycle from raw material extraction to end - of - life remains insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to regenerative building design supported by circular economy and low - carbon principles. Currently, no unified quantitative framework links early - stage Carbon Designer 3D (CD3D) massing studies with cradle - to - cradle LCA and circular economy (CE) metrics to assess circular and low - carbon design performance. This research develops and applies an integrated framework that combines: early - stage carbon modelling using CD3D within OneClick LCA; a full life cycle assessment of Modules A1 – A5, B4 – B5, C1 – C4, and D following EN 15978; the Building Circularity v2 assessment; and a multi - criteria environmental impact analysis (GWP, acidification, eutrophication, resource depletion). The framework is assessed on a hotel building. Regenerative design strategies, based on circular and low - carbon principles, reduced embodied GWP by 20%; Module D delivered a 10% avoided emissions benefit; and circular strategies extended material service life by 10 years. The results indicate that integrating circular and low - carbon design principles with LCA and CE methodologies in a single computational workflow can deliver approximately 35% – 40% embodied carbon reductions at early design stages and yield a net positive environmental outcome when Module D is accounted for. The study offers practical guidance for designers, engineers, and policymakers working toward near - zero embodied carbon and energy - related CO2 emissions (CO2eq) in mining and construction industry.
