An integrated framework assesses co-benefits of China's Natural Forest Protection Project, finding broad gains in both carbon sequestration and biodiversity. XGBoost with SHAP reveals forest cover, soil depth, and precipitation as key nonlinear drivers, with contribution turning positive near 25% forest cover and 300 mm precipitation. It maps priority zones and drivers to guide targeted, spatially differentiated forest governance.

In the global GX context
As TNFD and nature-related disclosure gain traction alongside climate frameworks, this offers a replicable method for quantifying biodiversity–carbon co-benefits of nature-based policy, informing how disclosure regimes can treat nature and climate jointly rather than in silos.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The escalating crises of climate change and biodiversity loss represent paramount challenges in global environmental governance. The Natural Forest Protection Project, a nature-based solution, represents a pivotal strategy for addressing this dual imperative. However, existing studies have largely focused on single ecological outcomes, leaving climate mitigation–biodiversity conservation co-benefits and their spatial differences insufficiently understood. Here, we developed an integrated assessment framework to evaluate the co-benefits of China’s Natural Forest Protection Project and to identify their spatial heterogeneity, dominant drivers, and implications for differentiated governance. Our findings indicate that the Natural Forest Protection Project broadly increased both carbon sequestration and biodiversity across most regions. The analysis combining extreme gradient boosting with Shapley additive explanations further indicated that forest cover, soil depth, and precipitation were key drivers with nonlinear contribution patterns. Forest cover and annual precipitation showed clear contribution shifts in the fitted model. Their contributions to predicted co-benefits turned from negative to positive at approximately 25 % forest cover and 300 mm of annual precipitation, respectively. Leveraging the distinct landscape characteristics of each identified zone, we delineated priority areas and critical drivers for future targeted management. This research provides a robust methodological framework for evaluating the integrated outcomes of large-scale ecological policies and offers actionable guidance for the precision management and spatial optimization of natural forest conservation efforts.
