English
This chapter examines sustainability challenges in data centers, focusing on critical minerals, water, and power access. It highlights the gap between Amazon's green pledges and actual practices, and uses the Hamina data centre in Finland to show how greening can paradoxically cause energy deficits for local communities when data centers monopolize renewables.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
For global readers, this paper offers a critical perspective on data centre greening, questioning the net benefits of renewable procurement by large tech firms. It is relevant to the ongoing debate about the sustainability of digital infrastructure, echoing concerns in CSRD and ISSB framework disclosures about the social and environmental impacts of energy use.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Data centre sustainability and greening are among the most critical issues facing the data centre industry. This chapter highlights issues related to access to critical minerals in contexts such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where extractivist mining has taken a toll on local people. The chapter’s key focus, however, is on local issues, especially access to water and power. While data centres have made commitments to greening, the example of Amazon’s green pledge to attain carbon zero is used to foreground the gaps between the principles and pledges on the one hand, and what is really happening on the other. It uses the example of the data centre, Hamina, in Finland to highlight the costs of greening to local communities. When large data centres use the public values of greening to buy all renewables and even purchase energy in advance of production, local communities and businesses face energy deficits. In this sense, greening and the discourse of renewables can have paradoxical outcomes.
