Two rehabilitation mortar mixes for masonry repair were designed using low-emission binder systems that partially substitute Ordinary Portland Cement. Standardized lab tests on fresh and hardened properties showed functional performance comparable to a commercial reference product, while LCA indicated more favorable environmental impacts across monitored categories. The study demonstrates the technical and environmental viability of low-emission binders in construction materials.

In the global GX context
Embodied carbon in construction materials sits at the core of Scope 3 Category 1 accounting under GHG Protocol and is increasingly targeted by EU CBAM and green public procurement rules. This LCA-based comparison of low-emission binders offers a template for material-level decarbonization evidence that feeds into ISSB/CSRD disclosure of purchased goods and services.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Currently, modern construction technologies and materials are confronted with the urgent challenge of fulfilling sustainable development goals. In accordance with global decarbonization strategies, the construction industry is intensively focused on the development of innovative materials, for which full functional compliance with conventional standards is required, while simultaneously minimizing negative environmental impacts. In this article, the results of a comprehensive experimental development of rehabilitation mortars intended for the remediation and reconstruction of masonry structures are presented. The primary contribution of the research lies in the application of an advanced low - emission binder system, by which carbon dioxide emissions generated during the production of primary raw materials are specifically reduced. Within the framework of the conducted study, two mixtures of innovative rehabilitation mortars were designed and thoroughly optimized, utilizing alternative material bases for the partial substitution of Ordinary Portland cement. The proposed mixtures were subjected to a series of laboratory tests using standardized experimental methods. The monitoring was focused on key parameters of the mortars in the fresh state, such as consistency, air content and bulk density, as well as on the properties of the hardened composite. Specific focus was targeted to mechanical characteristics and the dynamics of strength development over time. The obtained values of the tested properties for the new mixtures were subjected to a comparative analysis with the parameters of a reference mortar, which is a commercially available product. The evaluation also included the quantification of environmental impacts through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which allowed for an objective comparison of the ecological footprint of the developed mixtures against the reference sample. The results of the experiment demonstrated that the innovat ed mortars exhibit comparable functional properties relative to the commercially available standard. Simultaneously, it was confirmed that the applied binder system leads to more favourable environmental parameters across the monitored impact categories. The presented study thus confirms the potential of low - emission binders to produce technically effective and environmentally friendly construction materials, fully meeting current demands for sustainable construction.
