English

Agroforestry, combining woody perennials with crops or grassland, improves microclimate, reduces drought and heat risks, enhances biodiversity, and stabilizes yields. It is a promising tool for both climate adaptation and mitigation in agriculture, but scaling requires improved policy support and communication.

日本のGX文脈において

日本でも農業GXの文脈でアグロフォレストリーの導入が検討されているが、農地法や補助金制度との整合性、担い手不足などの課題がある。本稿は、気候変動適応策としての有効性を示す根拠となる。

In the global GX context

Agroforestry is increasingly recognized in global climate frameworks (IPCC, UNFCCC) as a nature-based solution for adaptation and mitigation. Its potential for carbon sequestration and resilience aligns with TCFD/ISSB reporting on land-use and climate risks.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Agroforestry as a tool for climate adaptation in agriculture: Agroforestry deliberately combines woody perennials with arable crops or grassland on the same land. Historically, this form of land use was widespread, but it was largely displaced during agricultural intensification. In the face of drought, heat, erosion and flash floods, it is now gaining renewed importance. Agroforestry systems can improve the microclimate by reducing wind speed, lowering evaporative stress, retaining more water within the landscape, and thereby contributing to cooling and mitigating weather extremes. At the same time, they promote biodiversity, habitat connectivity, and the protection of soils and water resources. They also offer economic benefits at the farm level by stabilising yields and generating additional products such as timber or fruit. This article shows that agroforestry is therefore among the most promising instruments for climate change adaptation and, at the same time, for climate change mitigation in agriculture. However, its rapid dissemination will require improved support schemes and broader communication of the major advantages of agroforestry systems.
