English
This chapter argues that agricultural systems are both a cause and a key solution to the global environmental crisis. It applies material and energy flow accounting from ecological economics to agroecosystems as coproduction with nature, using circular energy analysis and diverse EROI metrics to map the transition from past solar-based organic farming to fossil-fuel agriculture and toward a new solar-based economy.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This chapter argues that agricultural systems are an important part of the current global environmental crisis and, at the same time, can provide an even larger part of the solution. To understand why this is so and how the agroecology transition is as important as the energy transition to renewables in overcoming the climate emergency, the chapter proposes a novel approach that connects agroecology with a material and energy flow accounting of social metabolism developed in ecological economics. This allows us to adapt energy analysis to agroecosystems seen as coproduction with nature. As their sustainability depends on the ‘law of return’ of sufficient biomass to the self-reproducing living funds of these agroecosystems, a more circular energy analysis using diverse energy returns on energy inputs (EROI) is required. This opens the door to mapping the changing energy profiles from past solar-based organic farming to current fossil-fuel-based agriculture and back again toward a new solar-based economy in the 21st century, this time considering the new roles that agricultural production and agroecosystem services must play compared to the preindustrial era.
