Developed an AHP framework to evaluate environmental sustainability of sport mega-event host cities, using Super Bowl as a case. Five environmental impacts (energy, GHG, travel, waste, water) linked to city characteristics; travel-related Scope 3 emissions and grid carbon intensity are key. Applied to 19 past and 3 candidate cities; Minneapolis top, Buffalo first among candidates, large-scale renewable procurement best strategy.

In the global GX context

Globally, sport mega-events face increasing scrutiny over environmental impact. This AHP framework provides a transparent, data-driven method for host city selection and intervention prioritization, aligning with sustainability goals and potentially influencing event bidding and planning processes.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Sport mega-events bring various environmental burdens to host cities, and the degree of these burdens is closely related to the specific conditions of each city. For my paper, I developed a transparent, data-driven Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework to evaluate the environmental sustainability of candidate host cities. I took Super Bowl LIX as the empirical basis, dividing the decision into five major environmental impacts (energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, travel & transport, waste management, and water usage) and linking them to six location-specific characteristics of cities. By using published post-event audits and public datasets, I measured these five environmental impacts in modern Super Bowls and found that travel-related Scope 3 emissions and grid carbon intensity are the main factors affecting the total environmental footprint. Therefore, I assigned higher weights to transport and greenhouse gas criteria in the top level of the AHP framework. I applied this model to 19 previous Super Bowl host cities and 3 candidate cities that have never hosted the event, extended it to event-specific criteria for Formula 1 and the Olympic Games, and built a strategy-selection AHP to determine the priority of interventions for multi-sport events. The results show that Minneapolis got the highest score among previous host cities, Buffalo (NY) ranked first among the candidates, and large-scale renewable energy procurement is the best strategy. In conclusion, this AHP tool can convert different types of environmental evidence into reusable guidance for host city selection and strategy prioritization, providing decision support for sustainable host city selection and event planning.
