Abstract As Southeast Asia rapidly urbanizes, cities face mounting challenges as both contributors to and victims of environmental degradation and climate change, making sustainable urban development an urgent priority. One promising approach to address these issues is nature-based solutions, with road infrastructure emerging as a key area for integration. This review examines the current state of research on the integration of nature-based solutions into urban road infrastructure, with a specific focus on the Southeast Asian region. A total of 28 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English between 2015 and 2025 were analysed using a thematic framework centred on nature-based solutions and road infrastructure. This review reveals that while nature-based solutions are being increasingly recognised for their role in supporting sustainable cities, their application within road infrastructure in Southeast Asia remains underexplored. Furthermore, the results point to significant gaps in geographic coverage and qualitative analysis, as well as limited attention towards some design-oriented aspects. The range of nature-based solutions and road types studied in the existing research is also narrow. Furthermore, this review highlights how the literature underscores the effectiveness of context-sensitive nature-based solutions in supporting sustainable development, when sufficiently and properly implemented.
