📄 Abstract(原文)
Cassava ( Manihot esculenta Crantz), a resilient starchy tuber native to tropical and subtropical regions, plays a vital role in global food security, particularly in resource-poor rural areas. This study investigates constraints to cassava farming in Barangay Quezon Jr., Ormoc, Leyte, a region transitioning to cassava production post-Typhoon Yolanda. Notably, the Philippines ranks among top cassava producers, with significant reliance on this crop for food and income among millions. Despite favorable climatic conditions, local productivity is limited by inadequate cultural practices, high input costs, and susceptibility to natural disasters. Through key informant interviews and SWOC analysis, the research identifies prevailing challenges, including poor management practices and limited capital, which hinder production quality and diversification. The study proposes options to enhance value-added products, emphasizing the development of efficient post-harvest processing facilities and improved access to markets. By establishing organized supply chains and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, local farmers can leverage cassava's economic potential. Furthermore, promoting technologically advanced farming techniques and encouraging financial inclusivity through cooperative models are recommended to address yield limitations and boost household food security. The results underscore the need for comprehensive support systems, integrating governmental and non-governmental initiatives, to facilitate sustainable cassava farming practices in the region. Ultimately, by addressing the economic and environmental sustainability of cassava production, this research aims to contribute to poverty alleviation and enhanced food security in Leyte and similar agricultural landscapes.
