English
Limonitic nickel ore from Indonesia was reduced at 900°C under NH3 with 0–20 wt% Na2SO4, reaching 82.74% reduction at 15 wt% and 2 h while nickel metallisation stayed near 92%. Transparent carbon accounting for the reduction step gives 0.17–2.24 kg CO2-eq/kg FeNi versus 12.6–13.9 for conventional practice, with ammonia utilisation as the controlling scale-up variable.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Ferronickel production from lateritic ore is among the most carbon-intensive operations in non-ferrous metallurgy, emitting roughly 18 tons of CO2-eq per ton of product, because carbon serves simultaneously as reductant and as fuel. This work treats ammonia as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier for the reduction step and asks two coupled questions: what process window it defines, and what carbon intensity it can actually deliver. Briquetted limonitic ore from Indonesia was reduced isothermally at 900°C under an NH3 flow of 0.3 L/min, with Na2SO4 additions of 0–20 wt% and holding times of 0.5–3 hour, and the products were characterised by XRD, SEM-EDX, and AAS. The degree of reduction rose from 67.46% without additive to a maximum of 82.74% at 15 wt% Na2SO4 and a 2 h hold. Recasting the AAS grades against the head assay shows that nickel metallisation stays near 92% across the series while iron metallisation climbs from 32.6% to 35.8%. A transparent carbon accounting for the reduction step places the intensity between 0.17 and 2.24 kg CO2-eq/kg FeNi depending on the ammonia and power supply routes, against 12.6–13.9 kg CO2-eq/kg FeNi for conventional practice, with ammonia utilisation identified as the controlling variable for scale-up.
