This article describes a biomass trading project that transforms empty fruit bunches (EFB) from palm oil production into a cost-effective fuel for co-firing in power stations. By leveraging backhaul shipping from Southeast Asia to the Middle East and natural drying in the UAE climate, the project reduces emissions, displaces open burning in plantations, and generates voluntary carbon credits.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
日本のGX文脈において
日本ではバイオマス発電の燃料調達が課題となっており、本件のような国際サプライチェーン構築の事例は参考になる。ただし、PKS(パームヤシ殻)が主流の日本市場においてEFBの実用性は限定的。
In the global GX context
This case illustrates a creative logistics solution for biomass supply chains, relevant to global efforts in waste-to-energy and carbon offset markets. It shows how backhaul shipping and natural drying can reduce costs, making biomass more competitive with coal.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Tom James describes a biomass trading project that transformed a problematic waste stream into a cost-effective energy resource. By focussing on empty fruit bunches (EFB), a challenging residue from palm oil production in Malaysia and Indonesia, he identified that plantation owners needed a sustainable way to dispose of this surplus. He arranged logistics to collect and transport EFB to ports, capitalizing on low backhaul shipping rates to the Middle East by using empty oil tankers returning from Asia. The climate and space in the United Arab Emirates made it possible to dry the high-moisture content EFB naturally with minimal additional cost. Once dried, the material was suitable for co-firing in power stations with coal, reducing emissions and supporting voluntary carbon certificate generation. The approach not only provided value for all participants but also displaced environmentally harmful burning in plantations and reduced coal use. James’s strategy relied on optimizing logistics, leveraging backhaul opportunities and ensuring synergy between all supply chain elements.
