English

This paper uses staggered difference-in-differences to examine China's Intelligent Manufacturing Policy's effect on reducing firms' pollution emission intensity relative to export value. It identifies four transmission channels: improved internal management, eased financing constraints, enhanced green innovation and efficiency, accelerated digital transformation, and total factor productivity gains. Positive spillover effects on supply chain partners are found. Effects are stronger in regions with high AI agglomeration and among growth-stage firms. The study demonstrates that production-side digital-intelligent upgrading can reduce export-related environmental costs.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper provides rigorous causal evidence on how industrial policy (intelligent manufacturing) can simultaneously promote digitalization and environmental performance in trade. It offers lessons for global policymakers seeking to design green trade policies, especially in the context of supply chain decarbonization and industrial upgrading. The spillover effects along the supply chain are particularly relevant for multinational corporations with Chinese operations.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract This paper investigates whether China’s Intelligent Manufacturing Policy promotes green trade development. Using data from A-share listed companies from 2009 to 2019, we analyze how policy participation affects pollution emissions relative to export value. We find that participation in the Intelligent Manufacturing Policy significantly reduces firms’ pollution emission intensity relative to their export value, indicating a substantial improvement in green trade performance. The study identifies four primary transmission channels: improved internal management and eased financing constraints, enhanced green innovation output and efficiency, accelerated digital transformation, and gains in total factor productivity. Furthermore, the policy generates positive spillover effects across the supply chain, improving the environmental performance of upstream suppliers and downstream clients. Heterogeneity tests reveal that these benefits are most pronounced in regions with high artificial intelligence industry agglomeration and among firms in their growth stage. These findings demonstrate that production-side digital-intelligent upgrading is a critical driver for reducing export-related environmental costs in open economies. The study provides practical insights for policymakers on leveraging intelligent manufacturing as a strategic tool to foster sustainable international trade.
