English

Using 500 firm-year observations across five ASEAN markets (2017–2021), this study regresses bid-ask spreads on ESG disclosure, assurance quality, and enterprise risk. ESG disclosure significantly reduces information asymmetry, while assurance and operating risk show no direct effect. Investor protection moderates the disclosure effect, reducing the marginal information value of firm-level transparency in stronger institutional settings.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD disclosure regimes expand, this paper provides emerging-market evidence that the information value of ESG disclosure is conditional on institutional investor protection—relevant to global debates on whether mandatory disclosure alone improves market efficiency. It also offers a replicable framework for assessing disclosure effectiveness across heterogeneous jurisdictions.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Capital markets face informational friction when investors lack consistent visibility into non-financial performance across heterogeneous institutional environments. This study implements a data-driven analytical framework to evaluate how environmental, social, and governance disclosure, sustainability report assurance, and enterprise risk affect market information asymmetry across Southeast Asian firms. The methodology integrates multi-source corporate reporting and market data using Stata 17 regression models to examine direct and moderating relationships. The dataset comprises 500 firm-year observations from 2017 to 2021 across listed firms in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, obtained from Bloomberg ESG Disclosure Scores, S&P Capital IQ financial metrics, market bid-ask spreads, and World Bank Worldwide Governance Indicators. The results based on bid-ask spread measures show that ESG disclosure significantly reduces information asymmetry with a coefficient of -0.00004, while assurance quality and operating risk have insignificant direct effects. Interaction analysis further indicates that investor protection moderates the ESG disclosure effect with an interaction coefficient of 0.00016, suggesting that stronger institutional protection reduces the marginal information value of firm-level transparency. This analytical framework supports financial managers, market analysts, and regulators in evaluating market transparency, disclosure effectiveness, and sustainability reporting strategies across emerging markets.
