English

Comparing Tesla and Volkswagen, this paper analyzes how ESG rating divergence intensifies corporate financing constraints through information asymmetry, stakeholder theory, and signaling theory. It identifies three channels—information ambiguity/risk premium, stakeholder bargaining, and signal credibility differentiation—and argues that inconsistent ESG signals raise financing costs. It recommends firms balance ESG activities and improve disclosure, and governments build standardized, cooperative ESG rating systems.

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD disclosure regimes expand, ESG rating divergence is a recognized obstacle to comparability and capital allocation. This paper's signaling/information-asymmetry framing helps explain why inconsistent ESG signals raise financing costs, complementing global work on rating agency methodology and disclosure standardization.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Based on the problem of information asymmetry and the theories of stakeholders and signalling, Tesla and the Volkswagen Group are selected as comparison cases in this paper to explore how different ESG ratings affect the financing constraints of enterprises. Based on the research, the three reasons for financing difficulty due to rating differences are “information ambiguity-risk premium”, “stakeholder bargaining” and “signal credibility differentiation”, and the severity of the constraint is negatively correlated with the consistency of ESG signals. Tesla has had a somewhat declining ESG score over time and is therefore more exposed to investment risk, credit risk and others. Volkswagen has been making systematic reforms after the scandal and is now carrying out good ESG management and open disclosures to reduce the rating drop and secure funds. As shown in the above results, the inconsistency of signals has increased information asymmetry and reduced the efficiency of signaling; thus, it has raised financing costs. Consistently signalling will lower these constraints. Therefore, this paper puts forward that enterprises should increase the balance of ESG activities and improve information disclosure; at the same time, the government can reduce financing friction by establishing a standardised, cooperative ESG rating system. This paper presents some problems at the micro level related to the economic impact of ESG rating discrepancies.
