English

Using 120 non-financial firms on Indonesia's IDX80 (2020–2023), this study tests whether ESG risk mediates the link between ESG disclosure and cost of debt (COD). ESG disclosure lowers ESG risk, which in turn raises COD, confirming partial mediation. Female representation in sustainability governance directly affects COD but not ESG risk. Creditors appear to price ESG disclosure quality and ESG risk into credit decisions.

In the global GX context

This adds emerging-market evidence to the global ESG–cost-of-capital literature, complementing TCFD/ISSB-aligned disclosure research mostly drawn from developed markets. It supports the risk-based transmission view that disclosure quality reduces financing costs via lower ESG risk, relevant to transition finance and lender credit-risk frameworks under CSRD/ISSB.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study aims to examine whether ESG risk (ESGR) mediates the relationship between ESG disclosure (ESGD) and female representation in sustainability governance (FESG) on the cost of debt (COD). The study uses a sample of 120 non-financial companies listed on the IDX80 index over the 2020–2023 period, selected using a total purposive sampling technique. Regression-based mediation analysis is employed to test the direct and indirect effects among ESGD, ESGR, FESG, and COD.The results show that ESGD has a negative and significant effect on ESGR, while ESGR has a positive and significant effect on COD, confirming the mediating role of ESGR in the ESGD–COD relationship. ESGD also has a significant direct effect on COD, indicating partial mediation. In contrast, FESG does not significantly affect ESGR but has a direct and significant impact on COD. Overall, the findings indicate that creditors incorporate ESG disclosure quality, ESG-related risk, and female representation in sustainability governance into their credit risk assessment and debt pricing decisions. This study provides novel empirical evidence on the risk-based transmission mechanism through which ESG disclosure affects the cost of debt in an emerging market context. By explicitly positioning ESG risk as a mediating variable and incorporating gender diversity in sustainability governance, the study extends the ESG–corporate finance literature and offers policy-relevant insights for sustainable financing practices in emerging economies.
