📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, as ISSB and CSRD push for more rigorous climate disclosure, this paper highlights the gap between rhetoric and action in Big Tech's sustainability reporting, particularly regarding climate justice and Global South impacts. It adds a critical perspective to the disclosure scholarship by questioning the fairness of corporate responsibility distribution.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Climate change disproportionately affects already disadvantaged countries in the Global South, evoking questions about the fair and just distribution of responsibilities between different actors for tackling climate change. The first international convention on climate crisis, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, emphasised ‘common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’, implying larger responsibility of Global North actors, state actors and corporations for taking action. This chapter addresses five major Big Tech companies – Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple and Microsoft – as moral agents who, because of their capacity, can be held responsible for combating climate change. From the perspective of climate justice, the authors asked how Big Tech companies address their responsibility for mitigating the effects of climate change in their sustainability reports and how their discourses incorporate justice concerns. This study shows that despite the adoption of climate justice terminology, platform companies pay limited attention to climate justice issues, and their corporate activities in the Global South reflect their economic and technological interests. The developing countries in the Global South appear merely as a scene where platform companies promote their social and environmental responsibility.
