English

Coding 210 annual integrated reports from oil and gas companies at sentence level, this study finds that SDG references are substantial but selectively linked to local content (employment, procurement, economic value). Climate and industry goals are most cited yet least linked to local content, while partnerships, education, and decent work are linked most. Local content is framed relationally rather than as statutory obligation, and linkage is strongest where host-country rules are most demanding.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper contributes to global disclosure scholarship by empirically mapping how SDG references in integrated reports connect (or fail to connect) to local content and supply-chain value creation, relevant to ISSB/CSRD social and economic contribution disclosures. It highlights a gap between headline SDG alignment and substantive local economic impact reporting.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study asks to what extent oil and gas companies link the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to local content and the employment, procurement, and economic value they generate in host countries in their annual integrated reporting. Using directed qualitative content analysis, I coded 210 annual integrated reports (one company per cell across seven regions, three tiers, between 2015 and 2024) at the sentence level in MAXQDA, treating an SDG and a local content reference in the same sentence as a link. The analysis shows that companies link SDGs and local content substantially but selectively: the goals they reference most, climate and industry, are the least linked to local content, while partnerships, education, and decent work are linked most. Local content is framed mainly through relational language rather than statutory obligations, and linkage is strongest where host-country rules are most demanding. The findings are descriptive and associational, not causal.
