This paper proposes the SDG-ESG Sustainable Development Index (SESI), an integrated framework for assessing sustainability performance in higher education institutions (HEIs) using ESG dimensions aligned with SDGs. Based on 17 SDG-derived indicators normalized to reference thresholds and aggregated via hybrid weighting, a pilot assessment at a university campus yielded an overall SESI score of 23.69%, indicating foundational maturity. Imbalances across ESG domains were found, with governance capacity identified as a major barrier.

In the global GX context
With increasing pressure on HEIs to demonstrate sustainability performance, this framework offers a standardized, comparable approach aligned with SDGs and ESG principles. It addresses the gap in longitudinal assessment and provides a baseline for decision-making, relevant to global sustainability reporting trends.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Higher educational institutions (HEIs) are key players in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); however, current methods of assessing sustainability usually focus on ranking or comparing HEIs to each other but cannot be used longitudinally or to assist with decision-making at the institutional level. This paper presents a solution in the form of the SDG–ESG Sustainable Development Index (SESI): An integrated framework to assess sustainability performance in HEIs (i.e., campus-level sustainability) through environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions relative to SDGs. The SESI framework is made up of ESG domain-specific 17 SDG-derived indicators, where each indicator’s value is based on data from institutional documents, sensor systems, audits, or policy documents. The values of each indicator are normalized to a constant reference threshold, aggregated using a hybrid weighting approach, in order to facilitate temporal comparison. Pilot assessments were conducted at a university campus and resulted in the Environmental, Social, and Governance scores of the campus being 0.26, 0.23, and 0.21 respectively; producing an overall SESI score of 23.69% and indicating a foundational level of sustainability maturity. Results indicated that there are imbalances across the ESG domains and identified governance capacity as a major barrier to sustainability progress. Overall, SESI has been shown to provide a framework for assessing campus sustainability and serves as a structured baseline for performance monitoring, strategic planning, and will eventually be integrated into data-driven sustainability decision support systems.
