This paper empirically examines how corporate greenhushing (underreporting of environmental initiatives) affects the cost of equity capital. Findings suggest that greenhushing increases perceived risk and raises the cost of capital, indicating investors penalize firms that hide their green efforts. The study underscores the financial benefits of transparent ESG disclosure.

In the global context of TCFD, ISSB, and SEC climate disclosure rules, this paper provides critical evidence that insufficient ESG transparency (greenhushing) can increase firms' cost of capital.
