English

Using LSEG ESG data for 2,435 listed firms (2007–2024), the study reconstructs firm-level sustainability histories and identifies six development pathways based on level, linear change, and curvature. Pathway membership links to governance, reporting, assurance, and resource infrastructures, and predicts future sustainability movement beyond current ESG scores and year effects. Similar ESG scores can mask different organizational histories, with implications for investors, boards, regulators, and rating agencies.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Amid ISSB/SSBJ adoption and CSRD-driven assurance requirements, this paper argues that disclosure scholarship and rating practice should move from static score snapshots to developmental trajectories. It offers a framework for interpreting why firms with identical ESG scores may face different transition and disclosure risks, relevant to TCFD/ISSB report users and rating agencies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Corporate sustainability research often treats environmental, social, and governance performance as a current‐year firm attribute. This article develops a pathway‐based account of corporate sustainability by examining whether firms follow distinct longitudinal sustainability development profiles and whether those profiles contain information beyond current scores. Drawing on dynamic capabilities and institutional theory, the study argues that firms do not simply respond to sustainability pressures through uniform convergence. Instead, they build, delay, maintain, or rebuild sustainability‐related capacity through different developmental processes. Using LSEG ESG data for 2435 listed firms observed between 2007 and 2024, the study reconstructs firm‐level sustainability histories and classifies firms according to growth features capturing level, linear change, and curvature. The analysis identifies six development pathways: capability leaders, abrupt transformers, low‐base accelerators, recovery firms, late developers, and progressive developers. Validation diagnostics indicate moderate separation and high stability under repeated subsampling. Additional analyses show that pathway membership is associated with organizational infrastructures, including governance, reporting, assurance, and resource characteristics. Incremental‐value tests further show that pathway membership explains future sustainability movement beyond contemporaneous ESG scores and year effects. The findings contribute to corporate sustainability research by shifting attention from static score levels to development pathways. They also show that similar current ESG scores may reflect different organizational histories, with implications for investors, boards, regulators, and ESG rating agencies.
