English

This meta-analysis synthesizes empirical accounting and finance studies on the financial consequences of ESG disclosure. It finds a significant negative association between ESG disclosure and cost of capital (equity and debt), driven by lower risk premiums and reduced information asymmetry. Higher disclosure quality also correlates with better financial reporting quality (lower discretionary accruals and real earnings management). Effects are stronger in developed economies with robust enforcement, larger firms, and high-profile industries.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB standards and mandatory sustainability reporting frameworks (CSRD, SEC climate rule) expand globally, this meta-analysis provides aggregated evidence that ESG disclosure lowers cost of capital and improves financial reporting quality. It offers standard-setters and regulators empirical support for the economic benefits of mandatory disclosure, while highlighting that effects depend on enforcement strength and firm characteristics.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This meta-analysis synthesizes the empirical accounting and finance literature to resolve mixed findings regarding the financial consequences of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures. Analyzing a comprehensive sample of quantitative studies published across global capital markets, this paper quantifies the aggregate effect sizes connecting ESG disclosure intensity to two critical corporate outcomes: the cost of capital (cost of equity and cost of debt) and financial reporting quality (accrual and real earnings management). Guided by stakeholder and signaling theories versus agency and overinvestment hypotheses, we apply random-effects models and meta-regressions to calculate Fisher’s z-transformed correlations. The primary findings reveal a statistically significant negative association between ESG disclosures and the overall cost of capital, driven primarily by lower risk premiums and reduced information asymmetry. Furthermore, higher ESG disclosure quality correlates with enhanced financial reporting quality, evidenced by lower discretionary accruals and constrained real earnings manipulation. Sub-group and moderator analyses demonstrate that these relationships are significantly stronger in developed economies with robust legal enforcement mechanisms, among larger firms, and in high-profile industries. Publication bias tests (Funnel Plots, Egger’s regression, and Trim-and-Fill) confirm the structural robustness of these results. This study offers critical policy insights for standard-setters (e.g., ISSB, SEC) and corporate managers navigating mandatory sustainability reporting frameworks.
