English
Using 2018–2023 panel data on listed firms in Indonesia and Malaysia, this study tests the link between climate risk (carbon emissions, waste) and modern slavery disclosure (MSD). GLS random-effects estimation finds no significant association, and economic freedom and power distance show no moderating effects. The results suggest environmental and human-rights accountability remain institutionally compartmentalized in ASEAN. It offers the first firm-level empirical test of the climate risk–MSD nexus in Southeast Asia.

In the global GX context
This adds to global disclosure scholarship by showing that in emerging ASEAN markets, climate and human-rights (modern slavery) disclosure operate through separate institutional channels rather than integrated ESG strategies. It informs ISSB/CSRD debates on whether social and environmental disclosures should be linked, and highlights governance gaps relevant to supply-chain due diligence regimes like CSDDD.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This study investigates the association between climate change risk, measured through carbon emissions and waste generation (WASTE), and modern slavery disclosure (MSD) among publicly listed firms in Indonesia and Malaysia. Drawing on institutional theory, stakeholder theory, and the approach‐inhibition theory of power, it also examines whether economic freedom (EF) and power distance (PD) moderate this relationship. Using panel data from 2018 to 2023 and Generalized Least Squares Random Effects estimation, the results show no significant association between climate change risk and MSD, with EF and PD exerting no significant moderating effects. These findings reflect the fragmented nature of institutional environments in ASEAN, where firms tend to respond to environmental and social pressures through separate mechanisms rather than integrated strategies. These findings are consistent with the possibility that environmental and human‐rights accountability remain institutionally and organizationally compartmentalized. This study contributes to the literature by providing the first firm‐level empirical test of the climate risk–MSD nexus in Southeast Asia, offering actionable insights for policymakers seeking to strengthen MSD governance in the region.
