This study codes item-level risk and opportunity disclosures in 40 mandatory ESRS and 30 voluntary VSME reports, finding risks outnumber opportunities by 2.32:1 (mandatory) and 2.93:1 (voluntary), with nearly two-thirds of voluntary reporters disclosing no opportunities. It highlights ESRS's additional filter on opportunities, which may understate actual findings, and corroborates results with KPMG, Datamaran, and EFRAG data.

In the global GX context
This paper provides empirical evidence of risk-opportunity asymmetry in European sustainability disclosure, relevant to global standard-setters (ISSB, CSRD) and companies preparing for mandatory reporting. It underscores the need for balanced disclosure and highlights potential biases in standards that may discourage opportunity reporting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Sustainability reporting under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards requires companies to disclose both risks and opportunities arising from sustainability matters. This study codes the impact, risk and opportunity disclosures of forty large European ESRS reporters and thirty mid-size voluntary VSME reporters, item by item, under a single protocol applied identically to both sides of the ledger, and asks how often each is disclosed. In the mandatory ESRS sample, 455 risks were disclosed against 196 opportunities, a ratio of 2.32 to 1. Fifty-two of 140 topic cells carried risks and no opportunities. In the voluntary VSME sample the ratio widens to 2.93 to 1, and nearly three-quarters of companies disclosed no opportunity at all. The gap is therefore one of emphasis where disclosure is mandatory and one of absence where it is not. Findings that cut against this pattern are reported alongside it: 36 of the 40 mandatory reporters disclosed at least one opportunity, and seven disclosed more opportunities than risks. The study counts what companies disclosed, which is not the same as what they found. ESRS applies an additional filter to opportunities — asking whether an opportunity is being pursued and built into strategy — and applies nothing equivalent to risks, so the disclosed record understates what any assessment may have surfaced by an amount this study cannot measure. The direction of the finding is corroborated independently by KPMG (270 statements), Datamaran (304 companies) and EFRAG (905 assured statements). The coding protocol, codebook and decision log are set out in full in the report. The item-level register, in which every item carries a page reference into the company's own statement, is available on request. Disclosure of interest. The author is the founder of Nemetan, which sells services in sustainability opportunity discovery. The research was self-funded and no external party had sight of or influence over the findings. Method disclosure. Extraction and item-level tagging were AI-assisted, working to a human-authored protocol, cross-checked against companies' own stated aggregate totals where published; the protocol, decision rules and adjudication of edge cases were human. No independent second coder re-coded either sample; that check can be run on request.
