📄 Abstract(原文)

This study examines how consumer goods firms in Tanzania integrate ESG practices into their operations and reporting systems, explores the regulatory and practical challenges influencing adoption, and assesses the alignment of ESG indicators with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8, 12, and 13. Guided by stakeholder theory and agency theory, the study adopted an explanatory mixed-methods design combining quantitative survey data, key informant interviews, and documentary review from listed consumer goods companies, regulatory institutions, and civil society organizations. Findings reveal that ESG adoption among firms is largely compliance-driven rather than strategically embedded, with implementation primarily motivated by regulatory requirements. Key barriers identified include high implementation costs, fragmented regulatory frameworks, limited institutional capacity, and inadequate technical expertise in ESG reporting. While companies demonstrate progress in environmental management, labor policies, and governance structures, significant gaps remain in advanced sustainability reporting, supply-chain due diligence, and climate accountability measures. The study suggests a unified national ESG framework aligned with international standards and emphasizes stronger coordination among regulatory agencies to support consistent implementation. By offering empirical insights from Tanzania’s consumer goods sector, the study contributes to the growing body of ESG literature in emerging markets and provides a practical framework for aligning corporate ESG practices with national development priorities and global sustainability agendas.
