📄 Abstract(原文)
We examine whether negative environmental, social and governance (ESG) incidents contribute to systematic downside risk in the equity value of firms. Leveraging data from RepRisk that captures negative ESG incidents at the firm-day level, we show that firms facing such incidents exhibit a significant rise in downside beta. This effect is especially pronounced when incidents are severe and novel. The relationship strengthens after the Paris Agreement and the staggered release of Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)'s sector-specific disclosure guidance, consistent with growing investor awareness towards ESG. Overall, our findings indicate that ESG contributes to elevated systematic risk and underscore the importance of considering ESG into portfolio construction, valuation frameworks, and disclosure standards particularly when the incidents are more salient.
