📄 Abstract（原文）

The manufacturing sector functions as a vital driver of economic growth. On the other hand, it has been identified as a major contributor to environmental degradation. In this context, the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, represented by companies' participation in environmental initiatives, has been steadily increasing among investors and financial institutions. However, the impact of such participation on productivity remains underexplored. This study examined the effects of environmental initiative participation on the productivity of 642 Japanese manufacturing companies. Considering the influence of financial performance and business size on the decision to participate, we first employed propensity score matching to address potential selection bias. We then conducted a two-step analysis combining the Malmquist productivity index, derived from data envelopment analysis (DEA), with panel data model estimation. The results indicated that participation in the Renewable Energy 100% (RE100) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is associated with increases in technical change, a key component of productivity enhancement. These results suggest that environmental initiatives encourage technology innovation and improve productivity.
