This chapter offers a thorough grounding for the communications practitioner on “the why” and “the how” of producing a sustainability report. It reviews how reporting has evolved and looks at the common approaches and the frameworks and regulations which are applied across the world. Through detailed case studies, it also looks at how to deal with sustainability disclosure against a backdrop of renewable energy development and the, sometimes inevitable, redirection of targets and objectives. Finally, it looks at how to make the most of the sustainability report when it comes to raising the profile of a company’s sustainability work and how to confidently turn a compliance exercise into a communications one. This is an essential guide for any communications professional who is new to reporting, and wants to understand how they can influence the process, or for those who want to update their knowledge of the business of reporting.
