English

Using a 430-firm S&P 500 panel (2010–2024), the study estimates sustainability disclosure directly as a function of assurance and observable conduct. Assured firm-years show ~0.3 SD more disclosure conditional on ESG controversies, but higher pre-assurance disclosure predicts first adoption—evidence of selective adoption, not a causal assurance effect. Two commercial assurance extracts agree on only 85.4% of firm-years, so binary assurance fields cannot identify regulatory treatment with engagement-level precision.

In the global GX context

As CSRD and ISSB push assurance into mandatory disclosure infrastructure, this paper shows binary assurance flags are too coarse for regulatory evaluation and that adoption is endogenous to disclosure maturity. It argues evaluation needs engagement-level detail—scope, level, subject matter, practitioner, covered period—directly relevant to global assurance-standard debates.

📄 Abstract(原文)

External assurance is becoming part of the regulatory infrastructure for sustainability reporting, but voluntary adoption may occur only after reporting systems have matured. This study examines that selection pattern in a balanced panel of 430 firms from the S&P 500 universe from 2010 to 2024. The design estimates sustainability disclosure directly as a function of assurance and observable conduct, avoiding a generated residual dependent variable. To guard against single-source measurement error, two commercial assurance extracts that agree on only 85.4% of jointly observed firm-years are treated as competing measures rather than a gold standard, and the principal results are required to hold across both. Assured firm-years exhibit 0.313 standard deviations more disclosure conditional on ESG controversies in the higher-coverage extract (t = 8.59) and 0.287 in the lower-coverage extract (t = 6.97). The association survives alternative ESG-performance benchmarks, a controversy-ceiling restriction, and a physical Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon-intensity benchmark. Discrete-time models show that higher disclosure, measured while firms are still unassured, predicts first assurance adoption in the following year in both extracts. The evidence identifies selective adoption, not a causal assurance effect. For public policy, it shows that binary assurance fields do not identify the regulatory treatment with engagement-level precision and that evaluation requires information on scope, level, subject matter, practitioner and covered period, identifying the reporting position from which firms first enter assurance.
