English
This study examines how ESG disclosure volume affects readability in European listed banks' annual reports (2014-2024) using the Gunning Fog index. It finds that environmental and social disclosures improve readability, while governance and regulatory-driven disclosures increase complexity. For banks with green bonds, greater environmental disclosure enhances readability, facilitating monitoring.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Grounded in cognitive load theory and complemented by legitimacy and signaling perspectives, this study examines whether including sustainability information across the three ESG pillars in banks’ annual reports affects the readability of corporate disclosures, particularly in the context of green bond issuance. Despite its relevance, the application of cognitive load theory to the comprehension of financial and accounting information remains limited in prior literature. To address this gap, the study analyzes the annual reports of European listed banks over the period 2014–2024 using the Gunning Fog as a readability index. Empirical findings highlight the dual nature of ESG disclosure in the banking sector. On the one hand, an increase in ESG-related content, particularly in the environmental and social dimensions, tends to improve readability and reduce cognitive effort. On the other hand, governance-related disclosures and regulatory-driven reporting requirements appear to increase textual complexity, thereby reducing readability. Core results of the analysis show that, for banks with at least one outstanding green bond, greater environmental disclosure increases the readability of annual reports, making it easier to monitor.
