English

This paper uses a conjoint experiment (N=499, 21,000 choices) to test how reframing fund carbon emissions—via visual/numeric labels or verbal analogies to personal carbon footprints—affects sustainable investment. A 5-star visual eco-label most effectively boosts investment likelihood regardless of individual differences, yet financial performance remains the primary driver.

In the global GX context

Globally, as sustainable finance regulations (SFDR, SEC climate rules) push for clearer disclosure, this study provides behavioral evidence on how to present carbon information to retail investors. It supports the use of simple visual labels to enhance comprehension and action, complementing standardized disclosure frameworks.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Financial consumers want to invest their money more sustainably. Yet, they rarely do. Consumer sustainable investment is partly limited by the cognitive demand of interpreting fund sustainability information, which is often reported using unfamiliar metrics that lack clarity, salience, and personal relevance. Using a conjoint design (Nchoices = 21,000, N = 499), we investigate the effect on sustainable investment of reframing fund carbon emissions to increase their clarity and personal relevance. Namely, we compare visual and numeric carbon labels (designed to increase comparability and salience of emissions) with verbal carbon analogies (designed to increase the personal relevance of emissions), which equate fund emissions to personal carbon footprints from day-to-day activities such as cooking meals, commuting and watching Netflix. Results show heterogeneity in the effect of fund carbon emissions on investment likelihood across frame and individual differences in pro-environmental attitude and investment experience. Practically, we support the implementation of ‘5-star rating’ visual eco-labels for best promoting sustainable retail investment as they show the largest effect, irrespective of individual differences. However, despite this, we also find that consumers remain primarily motivated by fund financial performance during investment, having theoretical implications for pro-environmental investment behaviour change.
