Using 2018-2024 A-share panel data across five high-carbon sectors, the authors build transition finance indicators from annual report text frequency and test nonlinear ESG effects with two-way fixed effects. They find a significant U-shape: upfront transition spending crowds out ESG investment, while long-run scale effects improve ESG performance, partially mediated by financing constraints. The U-curve holds only for pulp and paper, revealing strong cross-industry heterogeneity, and the paper proposes differentiated green credit and sector-specific transition schemes.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Adds empirical evidence to the global transition finance debate on whether transition capital temporarily depresses ESG metrics, relevant to ISSB/TCFD-aligned transition plan disclosure and to investors pricing transition risk. The sector heterogeneity findings caution against one-size-fits-all transition finance taxonomies such as the EU platform guidance.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Against Dual Carbon targets and expanding transition financial instruments, high-carbon industries face a trade-off between low-carbon transformation capital pressures and ESG performance improvement. Using 2018-2024 A-share panel data of five high-carbon sectors, we construct transition finance indicators via annual report textual frequency analysis. A two-way fixed-effects model with linear and quadratic terms tests its nonlinear ESG impact, alongside SA-indexed financing constraint mediation and cross-industry heterogeneity tests. Results confirm a significant U-shape: upfront transformation spending crowds out ESG investment, while long-run scale effects improve ESG performance. Financing constraints partially mediate this linkage. The U-shaped association only holds for the pulp and paper industry; coal and oil extraction sectors show no significant nonlinearity, and policy-supported ferrous and non-ferrous metal smelting sectors fail to display this U-curve. Endogeneity and robustness are verified via lagged variables, dynamic panels, high-dimensional interactive fixed effects, alternative proxies and Winsorization, with core findings intact. Three targeted policies are proposed: differentiated institutional green credit, classified industrial transition schemes, and firm-level capital.
