English

This conceptual paper proposes a four-dimensional Disclosure Quality Index to distinguish genuine sustainability disclosure from greenwashing. It synthesizes legitimacy, signaling, and impression management theories into measurable dimensions operationalized via established accounting text-analysis tools (Fog Index, Loughran-McDonald word lists). No empirical findings are presented; instead it offers a codable measurement architecture and a research agenda for future validity testing.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Amid CSRD, ISSB, and SEC climate disclosure, regulators and investors increasingly need to assess disclosure quality rather than mere presence. This framework offers a theoretically grounded, codable index that could feed greenwashing screening and assurance debates, though it remains untested and developed-market-centric.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Purpose: To propose a conceptual framework for a four-dimensional Disclosure Quality Index capable of distinguishing genuine sustainability disclosure from greenwashing, addressing the gap between decoupling-based quantitative scores and content-analysis-based general disclosure quality indices. Methodology: This is a conceptual/theoretical paper. The proposed index is developed through a synthesis of legitimacy theory, signaling theory, and impression management theory, translated into four measurable dimensions and operationalized through concrete sub-indicators drawn from established accounting text-analysis methodologies (e.g., Fog Index readability, Loughran-McDonald word lists). Findings: As a conceptual contribution, the paper does not present empirical findings; it offers a theoretically grounded measurement architecture along with a research agenda for future construct- and predictive-validity testing. Scope and Limitations: The theoretical scope is limited to three theories among several plausible alternatives; the relative weighting of the four dimensions is left open for future empirical or expert-panel determination; and the framework draws primarily on regulatory and reporting literature from developed markets. Originality / Value: The paper bridges two previously disconnected streams of the greenwashing measurement literature by providing a theoretically justified, codable index architecture that offers a direct methodological foundation for future empirical validation studies.
