English

This review examines whether ESG-guided capital allocation improves risk-adjusted corporate financial performance or masks agency frictions and greenwashing, synthesizing meta-analyses, econometric studies, and rating datasets from 2001–2024. Meta-analyses report non-negative ESG–financial performance associations, with value traced to lower financing costs, human-capital productivity, and thinner downside risk tails, though aggregate effects remain modest and portfolio returns are regime-dependent. Rating divergence is severe: six major providers correlate at only 0.54 on average due to disagreements over scope and measurement. The authors recommend tying ESG compensation to audited material metrics, triangulating underlying indicators rather than composite scores, and prioritizing disclosure comparability over additional ratings.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Amid ISSB/CSRD-driven comparability efforts, this review quantifies why rating divergence (0.54 correlation) undermines ESG integration and argues regulators should prioritize disclosure comparability over new rating regimes—directly relevant to SEC climate rule debates and global transition-finance credibility.

📄 Abstract(原文)

ESG-labelled assets have expanded rapidly, transforming from a niche ethical strategy into a cornerstone of global capital allocation. Yet, this rapid growth encounters profound structural friction: regulators pull in opposite directions regarding mandates, and rating providers fiercely disagree on which firms qualify as sustainable. This review asks whether capital allocation guided by ESG metrics actually improves risk-adjusted corporate financial performance or instead masks agency frictions and greenwashing. The review synthesizes peer-reviewed meta-analyses, identified econometric studies, and rating-provider datasets published between 2001 and 2024, analyzing mechanisms across the environmental, social, and governance pillars. Meta-analyses overwhelmingly report non-negative ESG–financial performance associations. Identified studies trace this value to highly specific channels: lower financing costs, stronger human-capital productivity, and thinner downside risk tails. However, aggregate effect sizes remain modest, and portfolio-level evidence demonstrates weaker, regime-dependent returns. Rating divergence compounds this problem. Six major ESG providers correlate at only 0.54 on average, primarily due to fundamental disagreements over scope and measurement. Industry materiality, firm size, and varying regulatory regimes explain much of this heterogeneity. Corporate boards must tie ESG compensation strictly to audited, material metrics; asset managers must triangulate specific underlying indicators rather than trusting composite scores; and regulators should urgently prioritize disclosure comparability over additional subjective ratings.
